You do not have to say much about Martell: It is one of the oldest of the great Cognac houses (founded in 1715 by Jean Martell who was originally from Jersey).
Even though Martell, as the second largest producer of all (after Hennessy), today runs a huge estate of 283 hectares of vineyards, the wine production yields only cover 3% of the production! The remainder is supplied by 2300 (!) contracted winegrowers. Martell operates 24 stills, and 13 independent distillers work additionally to process the enormous quantities of fortified wines.
