A special Calvados made in honor of Dwight D. Eisenhower was auctioned in Paris as part of the D-Day 70th anniversary commemorations. Paris auction house Artcurial was offering 11 limited-edition bottles of Calvados Boulard Cuvée Ike, made in homage to the Allied commander, with proceeds going entirely to the World War II Veterans Committee.
The Calvados had been auctioned on day two of a wine sale to be held on June 19-20 in 2014. The apple-and-pear spirit Calvados, which originates from Normandy in France, is traditionally a blend from different years and Boulard’s Cuvée Ike includes some from the 1944 vintage, in homage to the man who was responsible for the liberation of continental Europe from the Nazis.
Boulard retains correspondence between the company and the general, who was obviously a fan. Only 15 bottles of Cuvée Ike have been made. On June 6, the official D-Day commemoration, bottles were presented to President Barack Obama, French president François Hollande and to Alexander Richard Eisenhower, grandson of the general and former president. Boulard will retain one bottle and the remaining 11 are to be offered at the auction.
